Description:
Paulina Theodore tells three stories from her childhood on Tobi and then critiques the behavior of contemporary children. Story one recounts what she takes to be a probable ghost sighting associated with the death of a child. Story two tells of a disastrous foot race and the third recounts how she tricked an old lady into giving her a cat. She then contrasts the out-of-control behavior of today’s children living in Koror with how kids behaved when she was their age. This session was recorded at Tobi State Office, Malakal, Koror by Peter W. Black. A detailed description and discussion of this session by Peter W. Black is included here at tb18-04090-pta-2014-06-04.pdf. A transcription by him is included here at tb18-04092-pta-2014-06-04.pdf.
Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
