Description:
Gemzek is spoken in the Tokombere subdivision, Mayo-Sava division of the Far North region of Cameroon by approximately 8,000-10,000 speakers in 16 villages. It is classified as Afro-Asiatic, Chadic, Biu-Mandara, A, A.5. The current paper is a preliminary outline of major features in Gemzek narrative discourse. The data comes from several oral texts recorded in Maroua and in the village of Guirziga between September 2011 and March 2012, as well as one written text found in the Gemzek collection of stories Gə labara bazlam Gemzek (Gravina, 2005). Glosses for all texts were provided by TCHEKMA Moussa, my research assistant. Thanks to Rhonda Thwing for her suggetions in revising this analysis.
