Description:
Relatives of Yakobus Aritahanu gather and organize plates that will be given as part of his brideprice ("mas kawin" in Malay) to his fiancee's family at his upcoming wedding. Plates are traditionally given as a brideprice in Cenderawasih Bay; the most valuable are antique Chinese ceramics. In the recording, Derek and David discuss the number and kind of plates that will be given, and how they will be organized and transported. Next, Yonatan directs others to reorganize some of the plates. Hermina and other women chat about what is going on. Finally, Dave asks Derek and Pit (in Malay) a few questions about the plates, their cultural significance, and their history.
