Description:
The recording was made by Peter W. Black in Madalaii, Koror, Republic of Palau, on May 28, 2014 in the conference room at Project HOPE, where both men work. Both men were chewing betel nut. With the exception of one person who entered and then immediately left the room, Wayne, Charley, and Peter were the only people present when this video was made. Documenting Ramari Hatohobei (literally the Tobian language of Tobi), a severely endangered Micronesian language. Tobi is one of the Southwest Islands of the Republic of Palau, a Micronesian nation in the western Pacific. Severely endangered, Tobian is currently spoken by approximately 150 people. Tobian and the dialects of Sonsorol, Merir, and Pulo Anna, the other three Southwest Islands, are closely related to the languages spoken in the outer islands of Yap and Chuuk.
