Description:
Alphabetically ordered Massacá-Portuguese vocabulary, entitled "Diccionario dos Massacás" and collected by Dr. Ary Figueiro around 1941. The handwriting does not seem to be Caspar’s. The language of the Massacá (also called Huari or Aikana) is unclassified. This Massacá-vocabulary appears to have the same origin as an anonymous wordlist on a FUNAI microfilm (nr. 312) kept at the Museu do Indio in Rio de Janeiro. According to Dr. Hein van der Voort, Ary Figueiro may be the same as Ary Pinheiro, who stayed with the Massacá or Aikana in 1941 at a place called Cascata on the Pimenta Bueno river. Dr. Pinheiro was the medical chief of the Expedição Urucumacuan led by the engineer Victor Dequech in 1941-3. In his memoirs, Mr. Pinheiro relates about his stay with the Aikana and his familiarity with their language and culture. He also claims authorship and announces the future publication of a wordlist of “massacás, canauás e sabanês” (Ary Tupinamba Penna Pinheiro, 1986, Viver Amazônico. Porto Velho: Secretaria do Estado de Cultura, Esportes e Turismo.) Unpublished handwritten document.
